Marvellous Mijas

Covering 150 square kilometres, Mijas is one of the largest municipalities in the province of Málaga. Similar to Benalmádena, Mijas offers two very distinctly different but equally alluring areas if you are looking to find a property for sale.

On the one hand, you may choose to look for a property in Mijas Pueblo, a traditional Andalusian white village, with all what that entails: whitewashed walls, traditional barred windows, geranium decorations, and enclosed patios. Even with recent developments, the village hasn’t lost one gram of its original Andalusian soul, and it is always a real pleasure to stroll along its streets. On the other hand, if you love the sea, then La Cala de Mijas might be a better spot, in which to look for a property for sale. If your taste is somewhere in between, there are other apartment complexes and areas in the vicinity that you may want to check out, such as El Sitio de Calahonda.

Mijas Pueblo: a countryside paradise

Since 40 per cent of the residents in Mijas municipality are non-Spaniards, we can hardly say that Mijas Pueblo is an untouched gem in the Costa del Sol. However, like many other traditional villages on the coast, the progressive arrival of international residents during the last decade has not weakened the Andalusian spirit of Mijas Pueblo. Rather, it has been enriched with an abundance of native and international friendships. Mijas Pueblo is a great choice if you want to live in an authentic Pueblo Blanco in the mountains. It’s a very charming place to look a property for sale in. Blessed by a mild climate throughout the year, you can appreciate the village’s Moorish origins with a visit to the Arabian wall. You can find other highlights of the village past in its main church (Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción) or in the ermita de la Virgen de la Peña, uniquely carved into rock. And of course, you cannot leave Mijas Pueblo without taking a ride in a burro-taxi: Mijas is one of the few towns on the planet where the taxi service is offered by donkeys. You have a choice of going in the buggy pulled by a donkey or to hop up on the back and ride. Or you can slowly walk through the village, it is not big.

La Cala de Mijas: a charming village by the sea

La Cala is a great choice if you want to live in a village close by the sea, which has not yet forgotten its fishermen’s origin, and which proudly keeps many of its traditions, even with the touristic development of the town. Here again, if you make an effort to learn Spanish, you will feel the welcoming nature of the Andalusian natives and you should be able to introduce yourself in the local community. This could be your town of preference if you lean towards a quiet village with authentic charm and wonderful sunsets, but still do not want to give up a great selection of restaurants and a couple of night bars that you may want to drop by once in a while. Simply a lovely place in which to look for a property for sale.
