The visitor arriving to Spain coming from Gibraltar has two options: he could first choose the road from the northeast and get closer to Sotogrande and from there to Estepona, Marbella and the other towns of the Costa del Sol. In this case, he will find new development after new development built on the sides of the road, with advertising signs in English and Russian, and typical Spanish eating joints on the road alternating with Burger King franchises, as well as wonderful beaches covered to the last centimeter by red skinned citizens coming from all Europe. However, if he chooses the eastern road and decide to enter the Costa de la Luz which expands through the provinces of Cádiz and Huelva, the view will be very different. Here, he will encounter huge coastal cliffs, traverse sunflowers field where you would be happy to get lost, or pass by green fields in which the local retinto cows nonchalantly stare at you. And so he will reach villages like Zahara de los Atunes or Barbate, which still retain their original seafaring soul, or beaches like Bolonia or Caños de Meca, which are authentic paradises and where it is hard to believe the small degree of real estate exploitation of the area. He will discover genuine white villages in impressive mountain areas that have “de la Frontera” surname attached, which reminds us that eight hundred years ago this was a land of permanent conflict between Christian and Arabic Kingdoms. Or he will arrive at holiday spots such as Cadiz, El Puerto de Santa María, or Sanlúcar de Barrameda, cities with an outstanding seafaring gastronomy, and whose touristic benefits Spanish people know and enjoy from many years ago. For the international visitor, Costa de la Luz is still a true paradise to be discovered, where communities of expatriate residents are still developing. Come and enjoy the warmth of a generous and welcoming people, the best of Andalusian gastronomy and a few spots next to the sea that have not yet succumbed to the over-exploitation of real estate companies.
