Imagine the sun’s rays hitting the ocean and colour it silver. Add to that a rugged coast line, empty beaches, lots of quaint little villages and some of the best surf conditions in the world. That is what you get on one of the most beautiful places on earth, the Silver coast in Portugal. The Silver Coast is the fascinating and diverse region situated between Porto and Lissbon, the distance is about 320 kilometres. This varied and historic region incorporates the remote mountains of the Serra da Estrela, stunning beaches and the districts of Leiria, Coimbra and Aveiro. All of them interesting and with distinct unique charms as districts as well as historic towns. Most people tend to explore the Algarve when they visit Portugal but that would be a mistake. The Silver Coast has lots to offer and some expats have already found a new home here. It is a fairly short trip between Lisbon and Porto but very rewarding. First you have the beaches. Among the best beaches of the Silver Coast you have Medão beach with the perfect tube surfing waves (Peniche), Praia do Carreiro do Mosteiro (Berlengas Island), small beach surround by huge cliffs with turquoise waters teaming with fish overlooking the pretty harbour. And then you have the historical towns. You have Leiria with remains from before the middle ages, Coimbra which is Portugal’s oldest university town and Aveiro. For a long period Aveiro was an important economic link in the production of salt and commercial shipping during Roman times. The name is thought to have come from "a gathering place or preserve of birds and of great salt". Do come and visit and explore the Silver Coast, you will not regret it.
