Costa de Almería

A desert flower

Costa de Almeria is located in the south east of Spain, between Costa Calida and Costa Tropical. Costa de Almeria has one of the best climates in all of Spain, dry and warm. In this area we also find Europe’s only desert, the Teberna desert. The Almeria coast is still relatively unexploited, and you can easily find authentic Spain. The property prices are also a lot lower than in the more developed areas. If you feel a little adventurous and may consider buying a property somewhere where not “everyone” else is buying, then Costa Almeria is well worth exploring. The most well-known tourist resorts are Roquetas de Mar and Almerimar. They are modern towns to the west of Almeria city. A little further north you find Mojacar, a quaint hill top village with a beach resort nearby. Mojacar is a favourite holiday spot for many wealthy people living in Madrid. Also, the nearby located villages of Carboneras, Garrucha and Vera are all pretty Spanish coastal towns. North of Almeria city, Almeria international airport is located. Several low-cost airlines serve the airport from the UK and other mid European cities. The number of flights from Scandinavia is also on the increase as more people discover the area. The high-speed train from Madrid is still in its planning phase but should it materialize, it will go from Madrid, via Alicante to Vera and possibly all the way down to Almeria. Since the weather is dry and hot, the landscape resembles some parts of the USA and Mexico. Several of the films about the wild west was filmed in the Costa de Almeria. Some of the films got a lot of attention, like Lawrence of Arabia, A fistful of dollars, For a few dollars more, The four Musketeers, The girl with the Dragon tattoo just to mention a few. Since the landscape suited the Wild West themed films several movie sets were built on the fringes of the Taberna desert. Some of them are still in business and are also open to the public. There you can grab a beer in a Western saloon and watch sheriffs chase bad guys in one of the daily shows. In Almeria there is also Europe’s only desert golf course, Desert Springs resort in Cuevas del Almanzora. But it is not only dry and hot in Costa de Almeria, the coast line is long and beautiful. There are an abundance of clean wonderful beaches and often empty coves. In the area, there is also Cabo de Gata which is a marine national nature reserve. Cabo de Gata is well worth a visit as is quaint fishing village Aqua Amarga. If you would like to explore further afield you can catch a ferry from the port in Almeria city to North Africa (Marocco, Algeria and the small Spanish enclave Melilla).
