Family time in one of Spain’s oldest towns

The fishing village Adra is located 50 kilometres west of Almeria city and is the fourth most important town in the region. It has more than 24 000 inhabitants. The village was founded in the 800’s and it was originally called Abdera and you can still find some interesting archeologically sites in the area. You can discover what life was like during Roman times, for example by visiting one of the sites. To look for a property for sale and make Adra your home or home away from home means you chose the Spanish. Adra is a well-functioning town with the majority of its inhabitants being Spanish. There is not a lot that caters especially for international visitors and should you wish to practise your Spanish, you have certainly picked the right place. The port and fishing are still important sources of income for the town, but agriculture is closing in. There are many plastic greenhouses all around Adra.

The village Adra is located by the sea. There is a port, lovely beaches, and a quaint old town centre. Adra is situated by the foot of Sierra Nevada and is surrounded by fantastic nature. There is an abundance of fauna and flora in the region. Las Albuferas de Adra (the Adra Lagoons) are of special interest. The lagoons have been created by the river Adras old delta. The lagoons make up a smaller wetland, being a natural habitat to wild birds. It is an exceptional spot for bird lovers with about 140 different kinds of birds, some being endangered. The tourist centre is located in Torre de los Pedigones, a 45 metres high tower. Next to the tower, there is an old vinegar factory now service as an exhibition centre. Originally (1922) these buildings housed San Andre’s foundry, home of Spain’s first steam-engines.

On the last Saturday in August each year there is a well-known flamenco festival, Festival de Cante Grande and every 5-10th September, the town arranges the next largest fiesta in the region. At that time, there are quite a lot of local tourists visiting the town. The climate in Costa del Almeria is subtropical with mild winters and hot summers. Adra could be the ideal spot if you are looking for a property for sale to make your home away from home in an authentic Spanish community close to the sea and with stunning landscape.
