Costa Dorada or Daurada in Catalan means the golden coast. The coast is located in the Tarragona province in Catalonia, south of Barcelona. Tarragona is the largest city. The coastal area is known for its many coastal towns but also for its many vineyards. Not far from Tarragona, you find the town of Reus which was the birth town of Antoni Gaudi. Gaudi was the most prominent representative of the Catalan modernisme style in architecture. (Modernisme is the catalan name for Jugend-style). Gaudi later moved to Barcelona to get an education and there are many famous Gaudi-buildings in Barcelona. There are many vineyards near Reus and a lot of wine is produced each year. During the 1900-hundred there was a wine louse plague eliminating many vineyards in Europe but the vineyards in Costa Dorada survived. With five locally produced wines awarded the EUs protected original mark, the area is certainly an interesting place for the wine lover. The produce is both cava and regular wine. There is also quite a lot of wine tourism with organized tours where the visitors go from vineyard to vineyard to try different grapes and wines. The local Penedès-region is the second largest wine district in Spain. The people of Tarragona has traditionally been industry or port workers but nowadays, there are also quite a few tourists discovering the city with new business opportunities for the locals. The Gold Coast has been a popular destination for tourists from the Netherlands and the UK. From 2005 there are also some tourists from Sweden as the first charter trips started then. If you are tempted to go looking for a property for sale in Costa Dorada you won’t regret it, it a very interesting area, especially if you are looking for something more than merely sun and sea. Property prices aren’t cheap but are lower than in Barcelona.
