Area Guide

Cadaques

Surrealistically wonderful

The old fishing village of Cadeques was Salvador Dalis favorite city. The village and its surroundings are depicted in many of his art works. Although other artists like Picasso, Miro and Frederico García Lorca were attracted to this area and there is plenty to see for all those of you who are interested in culture. If you are thinking about looking for a property for sale in Cadeques, then you can combine the authentic Spanish lifestyle with all the other amenities of a modern seaside resort. In the village there is an old charming town center with whitewashed houses and narrow cobbled streets. From the highest point of the village, when you reach the beautiful 16th century church of Santa Maria, you have one of the best views above the village. In the outwardly simple church you will find one of the most important Baroque altars of Catalonia from the 18th century. On the 1st of January each year, people meet at the lighthouse of Cabo de Creus to welcome the first sunrise of the new year. Cape Creus is the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula and it is very special to feel the first rays of the new year in Spain. The Cape Creus landscape is well known for its cliffs and forests. Many Catalans get something dreamy when they think of Cape Creus. There are undiscovered bays that are wonderful to explore by yourself. The beautiful large villas along the coast were mostly built by people who once found their fortune in the United States. They brought ideas and architecture from their time abroad and in many houses, you will find the Cuban style again. There is a lot to do and see in Cadeques. Do not miss the surrealistic Dali Museum, Casa Museu, which was back in the days originally Dali's home. He spent forty years altering, complementing, and then retreating from a house that is a piece of art itself today. The museum is a little bit of a drive away from Cadeques in Portlligat. If you want to see and experience all of this, it's best to spend a whole day. Throughout the year, various types of festivals are held, ranging from traditional to the celebrations of American culture of the early 20th century. If you decide to go looking for a property for sale in Cadeques, you will be involved in some art-related excursions and later on relax on one of the terraces in the old town.
