Area Guide

Almuñécar and La Herradura

Ideal for families

Although officially part of the Costa Tropical, the area around Almuñécar, in the province of Granada, can also be a great alternative for the property hunter in the Eastern Costa del Sol. Traditionally a summer refuge for the urban residents of Granada, this area may be ideal if you are looking for a summer resort town with incredible beaches, great facilities and a community that, although much more overwhelmingly Spanish than in the Costa del Sol towns, still welcomes a good mix of other nationalities. A 50 minute driving distance from both Granada and Málaga, as well as 90 minutes to the skiing resorts of Sierra Nevada makes this area ideally placed for an incredible variety of one day trips and activities.

Almuñécar: 19 kilometers of beaches and summer atractions

Undoubtedly, Almuñecar’s main attraction is its 19 kilometers of coastline, offering almost thirty different beaches to the summer visitor. As you can expect, variety will not be what you will be missing among such a plentiful choice of places to lazily relax in the sun. Almost all of them have full facilities and are considered to be of top level quality. Among them, we may find long beaches of fine sand, such as Playa de San Cristóbal, or smaller and secluded coves such as Calaiza. Besides enjoying the sand and water sports, there are many other attractions available to the residents of Almuñécar. At Peña Escrita Ecological Park, your children can watch many wild animals from the Iberian peninsula in their natural habitats. You may spend another afternoon perusing the creatures of the sea at Almuñécar Aquarium. And, of course, summer not only brings the seasonal opening of plenty of bars and nightclubs, but also the arrival of cultural events such as the renowned Jazz en la Costa festival. If all of this is making you consider Almuñécar as your future place of residence in Spain, but want to make sure that this is a perfect fit for your family, you should also be aware that Almuñécar is also the home for Almuñécar International School, the area’s multinational school for children ages 3-19.

La Herradura: a beautiful village ideal for families

Just 5 km to the west of Almuñécar lies the smaller and spectacularly beautiful village of La Herradura, which is still officially part of the municipality of Almuñécar. Although during the summer months it also exhibits its fine choice of bars and restaurants, La Herradura is a little more secluded and quieter than Almuñécar and may hold a particular appeal for families or those seeking some tranquility. La Herradura beach is a 2 km strip of sand close to the town, with still and cristal clear waters that are ideally suited for a fun afternoon of snorkelling. And if you like boats and yachts, you should not miss a walk around Puerto Marina del Este.
