Just a forty minutes drive north from the city of Lagos, Aljezur is located in one of the most astonishing areas in Western Algarve. In Aljezur you can have a little bit of everything including green valleys, mountains, high cliff beaches nearby, rivers, and a one of its kind Moorish Castle from the 10th century. If you are considering to buy a property in Aljezur, you will find here a corner of peace and tranquility. The town itself is a beautiful cluster of white-washed houses, overlooked by one the oldest castles in Portugal. And even though you may be prone to carry out quite a relaxed life in this area, you will still find plenty of daily activities to do throughout the year, such as trying out some great hiking trails or sampling a wonderful rosé from the Algarve while picnicking in one of Aljezur’s semi-deserted beaches. These can be found scattered all around the Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano, a fabulous natural wonder which covers Algarve’s west coast. Not to be missed in the park would be its beautiful, razor-sharp cliffs, which has become a natural reserve for a great variety of birds and other fauna. The urban development restrictions around the park also means that there is little chance that Aljezur will become the next Lagos or Albufeira, and you can still think of it as your well kept secret. If you are a surfer, then you should head to the beaches of Arrifana and Praia do Monte Clerigo, which can be found only about 10km from Aljezur. This area is sometimes known as Algarve’s Wild West due to its popularity with surfers, but if you prefer to stand on the ground you will also find here one of the greatest beach hiking paths in Southern Portugal. And for those other many afternoons in which you have nothing better to do, you will always discover something new if you just get lost in a new corner of the Natural Park. Come to Aljezur and its park, and forget about the world while you immersing yourself in its natural wonders.
