Wineries in Spain – A real pleasure!

MiMove on 2021-03-10

Do you like visiting wineries and trying new wines while enjoying the natural surroundings? In this week’s blog, we visit some of the best vineyards in Spain.

As the third largest wine producer in the world, Spain is also a popular country when it comes to vineyards and wine tasting. The big central region of Spain, Castilla-La Mancha, produces the most wine in the whole country. Approximately 16,800 hectoliters of wine a year come from this area. In second place we find Catalonia with about 3,150 hectoliters per year. Below we also see the rest of the country’s primary wine producers:

Castilla-La Mancha

There is plenty to see and do in Castilla-La Mancha when it comes to wineries and wine tasting. For example, the area around the small town of Villarrobledo offers pleasant excursions to vineyards but also a lot of historical sites to discover.

A wine bodega and farm that caught our interest was Bodegas Cesar Velasco where they make wines such as Merlot, Syrah, Cencibel and Tempranillo among the reds. Some white wines are Moscatel, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer.

Another winery in Castilla-La Mancha that offers a large assortment from a large organic farm far from the city is Dehesa de Luna and is located in La Roda Albacete. They offer tours and wine tastings on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 12:00 and 14:00. Click here for more information about bookings. In addition to wines from different types of grapes, they also sell olive oil, Iberian ham and rice.

Resort Wineries

For those who like to stay a little longer at the vineyard, maybe overnight or a long weekend, there are of course very nice places to choose between. Some of our favorites are located in different places in Spain. Here come some tips!

Hotel Eguren Ugarte – Laguardia

Eguren Ugarte is a small family hotel built by Vitorino Eguren, who also wrote a book that was inspired by this place. The rooms and suites, whose names correspond to the  different chapters in the book, are exterior overlooking the vineyards and are uniquely decorated. There are two restaurants, one traditional and one with signature dishes, both paired with wines from their own land.

It offers a sensory tasting of cheeses, wines and olive oil – all products from the organic farm. In the restaurant’s kitchen, Zorita’s Kitchen, chef Víctor Gutiérrez (owner of a Michelin star) composes organic food with inspiration from the Slow Food movement. The most famous guest who has ever visited the farm is Christopher Columbus.

It also offers a boat trip on the river Tormes.

Rotana Reserve – Mallorca

Located in a valley on Mallorca’s east coast, Reserva Rotana is one of the largest properties on the island with 200 hectares of gardens, a golf course and vineyards. The building is a 17th-century mansion that has been renovated into a luxury hotel. The original style has been preserved and each room is decorated with antiques and works of art.

Reserva Rotana

The restaurant, recommended by the Michelin guide in 2014, serves refined Mediterranean food prepared with products from the farm’s own garden and seasonal ingredients. The most notable facilities are the heated outdoor pool, a gym, paddle tennis courts and a private 9-hole golf course. A perfect place if you want to combine a variety of activities together with wine tasting. More about Reserva Rotana can be found here.
